"Seattle Times" To Ban Use Of Redskins Name
(Seattle, WA) -- The "Seattle Times" is the latest publication banning the use of the word Redskins in reference to Washington's NFL team. Sports editor Don Shelton says the use of the most controversial nickname in sports won't appear again in print or online as long as he is in charge. He went on to call the name absurd, offensive and outdated. The "San Francisco Chronicle" and online magazine "Slate" announced last year they would no longer use the name Redskins. Some Native American groups have lobbied to get the name changed, calling it racist and offensive. Team owner Daniel Snyder has repeatedly said he doesn't intend to change the name.
