Unpatriotic Inmates Receive 'Bread-And-Water' Diet

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Arizona inmates are getting patriotic for Veterans Day, whether they like it or not. U.S. flag stickers have been put in cells around Maricopa County to honor military veterans, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio says any inmate who messes with Old Glory will get the "bread and water" penalty. Anyone who removes or defaces the decal will have to eat Nutri-Loaf for a week, which Arpaio admits is disgusting. Ten inmates are already on the "diet," including a man who has torn the flag sticker down enough times to lose meal privileges through January 26th.
The American Civil Liberties Union says they are looking into the constitutionality of punishing prisoners for defacing flags. The stickers would be considered public property.
